How to Manage a Quick Move
Being under pressure to move quickly happens more often than you’d think. And when you do have to move quickly, often while still balancing work, school, kids, and living, it can be complicated. Covid adds to the complexity. To make your quick move easier to cope with, we’ve put together this list of suggestions.
Make a List
For some people, it may be multiple lists, but making a list – on your phone, in a notebook, using the back of a napkin – can help you stay focused. Start by sorting what you’re keeping versus what you are planning to get rid of. As you sort, take pictures of things you plan to sell so that you can get them listed quickly (eBay, Facebook marketplace, classified ads).
Pack What You Can Live without First
Once you’ve determined what you’re keeping, you can start packing the stuff you can live without for the next one to three months. You may be able to pack a kitchen box and pare down the number of pans and utensils you need to keep out. Box up off-season clothing that you will need later but can live without until after the move. Go through each room and try to pack everything but the essentials.
Plan Ahead
You don’t have to want to wait for cable, utilities, or internet to be connected in your new place. Contact your vendors now and schedule your time for connecting these important services. Since many of them are booked two or more weeks out, calling early will ensure you’re not without internet for the first few weeks you’re in your new place.
Rent a Storage Unit
If you have to be out of your place by a certain date and you are feeling overwhelmed with getting everything moved, consider renting a storage unit for a short period of time. It gives you a way to start emptying the place you’re leaving before you’re able to move into the new place while simultaneously giving you clarity about what’s left to sort and pack. It also makes it easier to get cleaning done without maneuvering around stacks of boxes.
